Peppermint tea is widely used to calm stomach disorders, reduce stress, eliminate bad breath and help reduce headache pain. According to a 2005 issue of the Journal of Food Sciences, not even small traces of caffeine were found in herbal, peppermint tea. This study looked at trace caffeine amounts in peppermint tea and other herbal teas such as chamomile, evening delight and wild raspberry. Peppermint tea did not have even trace amounts, which is beneficial for those who cannot consume caffeine due to health or personal reasons.


Caffeine is naturally found on tea leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Therefore, true teas, which are made from the tea leaves, such as green tea, black tea and oolong tea contain caffeine. Peppermint herbal tea is not a true tea as it does not contain tea leaves. Instead, peppermint tea is made from the leaves of the peppermint plant. Peppermint plants:

  • Grow between 2 and 3 feet tall
  • The plant blooms July through August
  • The flowers are small and purple in bloom
  • Opposite white flowers, are the fragrant, dark green, peppermint leaves
  • Contain menthol in the leaves, which are dried and crushed to make peppermint tea

If using the leaves, steep 1 tsp. of the dried leaves in 1 cup of boiling water for approximately 10 minutes. Let the tea cool to your desired temperature, strain the leaves and enjoy the beverage four or five times a day in between meals.

Peppermint is safe in most quantities. However, if you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease or hiatal hernia, avoid the drink as it may worse these conditions, says the University of Maryland Medical Center.
